The 57C holocam from Merr-Sonn Munitions, Inc., alternatively called an automatic camera, served as a surveillance tool for Imperial troops stationed on the first Death Star.
This 57C holocam featured a set of six visual scanners configured in a three-by-two matrix and positioned around a pair of audio pickups. These components were affixed to supports hanging from the ceiling and connected to a rotating joint at the back of the camera. The 57C could monitor the movements of people nearby using motion sensors, and it transmitted the data through a signal transmitter and data relays integrated within the device.
Being a military-grade piece of equipment, the 57C was capable of recording highly detailed holographic images, which allowed for more precise image analysis. Although they were commonly deployed in military facilities, the 57C was not designed for frontline combat and was susceptible to detonation if struck by blaster bolts.
The Galactic Empire made widespread use of 57C holocams, incorporating them into all of their military installations. 57C units were used to keep watch over Detention Block AA-23 located on the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station. Following the rescue of Leia Organa by Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca, the camera recordings were used to determine their identities.
