8D smelter droid

The 8D smelter droid, alternatively known as the 8D Smelting Operator, represented a robust industrial droid design. This model was produced by Roche Hive Mechanical Apparatus Design and Construction Activity for Those Who Need the Hive's Machines, a manufacturing entity established by the Verpine species located within the Roche Asteroids.

Description

8D schematics.

To better align with the predominantly humanoid galactic population, the 8D droid series was designed with a resemblance to Muuns, rather than mirroring their insectoid Verpine creators. A defining characteristic was their elongated head structure. However, these droids typically had minimal interaction with sentient beings once they were assigned to a specific task. The uniquely designed leg joints and slender limbs were a clear indicator of their Verpine origin.

The 8D model was specifically engineered for operation within smelting facilities situated on planets such as Aridus and Balmorra. These environments presented conditions too hazardous and intensely hot for most sentient life forms. Each component of the droid's body was constructed using high-grade Duravlex, an off-white material capable of withstanding temperatures exceeding 4,000 degrees centigrade. However, the droids rarely operated in blast furnaces with temperatures above 1,650 degrees centigrade.

The photoreceptors of these droids were compact and well-protected, which resulted in relatively poor eyesight. While 8Ds possessed significant strength and endurance, their movements were notably slow. These droids were programmed with limited intelligence, focusing their capabilities on basic labor tasks like mining and smelting. Known for their coarse personalities, 8D droids displayed a tendency to dislike more intelligent units and would often engage in bullying weaker droids when the opportunity arose.

Modifications could be made to 8Ds to enable damage control duties on starships. These upgrades included enhancing their servomotors to improve mobility and equipping them with a fire extinguisher and a tool kit.

Operational history

Before the Clone Wars, Roche introduced the 8D smelter droid into the heavy industrial sector, subsequent to the issues encountered with the earlier J9 worker drone. Customers frequently described the droid as durable, unfriendly, bad-tempered, unrefined, and slow-moving.

These droids participated in Nuna-ball leagues, suffering a defeat against Cybot Galactica's CLL-6 binary load lifter team in 22 BBY.

One particularly well-known 8D Smelting Operator, 8D8 (also referred to as Atedeeate), was employed within Jabba Desilijic Tiure's palace. He underwent modifications to become a starship maintenance droid, while under the cruel command of EV-9D9.

After joining Jabba's organization on the desolate desert planet of Tatooine, 8D8 was entirely reprogrammed to function as a torture droid, inflicting pain on both droids and organics. Despite this programming, 8D8 harbored a secret resentment towards his supervisor, EV-9D9.

Watto possessed at least two of these droids, which he used to operate garbage compactors in his junkyard.
