Plot summary

The Graf family and their droid CR-8R (nicknamed Crater) are exploring an unknown planet in Wild Space when Milo Graf goes missing. His sister Lina Graf and CR-8R find him in a puddle trying to chase local wildlife when Milo's Kowakian monkey-lizard, Morq, attacks CR-8R. Milo attempts to catch a rabbit with a net but Lina is suddenly grabbed by a creepervine. Milo and Crater throw Lina a fusioncutter and she frees herself. Milo argues with Lina over having lost the rabbit when Crater suddenly receives an encrypted piece of data sent from their mother, Rhyssa Graf. They decide to go back to their camp to check on their parents but first they fix Milo's speeder that had been flooded with water. As it gets dark the kids ride onto a plain where the Grafs had made camp but they're worried to find that their parents and all their belongings are missing from the camp site. They then find a holo-recorder that had recorded footage of their parents surrounded by Stormtroopers. When they finally get the footage to play it is of an Imperial Captain named Korda accepting charting information that the Graf parents had acquired for him. However when the Grafs ask for their fee as expected from such transactions Captain Korda refuses and threatens to take their information by force before the hologram abruptly cuts off. When it returns their father, Auric, is on the ground after being beaten. He agrees to Korda's terms and proceeds to seemingly send the data to the Imperials through his datapad. Korda then enslaves the Grafs citing that the Empire needs more explorers. Finally Korda orders his Stormtroopers to find and destroy both the Graf children and the Graf's ship, the Whisper Bird, which is hidden in a nearby cave. They drive to the cave only to find Stormtroopers planting bombs to destroy the Whisper Bird. Milo shoots a net at some nearby vines to distract the Stormtrooper commander who is then grabbed by creepervines. The Stormtroopers shoot the creepervine to free their commander before turning around to see the Graf children running into the cave. The Stormtroopers shoot at the roof of the cave and collapse the entrance. They then leave after assuming the children are dead. Milo and Lina find the Whisper Bird where they scan for exits to find a tunnel system that they can fly through. They escape the exploding cavern while being forced to fold the wings of the Whisper Bird and use its mining laser to widen the gap of the final exit where they finally leave the cave system. They exit just in time to see Captain Korda's ship jump to lightspeed. After a moment of contemplation they agree to jump to the planet Thune where they believe friends of their parents may be able to help them.

Development

According to author Cavan Scott, as originally conceived, the beginning of Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space was very similar to the opening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Due to the similarity with the then upcoming anthology film, Lucasfilm Story Group told Scott the story needed to be reworked, resulting in Adventures in Wild Space: The Escape.
