Agoraphobia

Description

The anxiety disorder known as agoraphobia caused a fear of open spaces and empty planets in those in which it manifested. Individuals who had agoraphobia were known as "agoraphobic." Several sentient species could be afflicted by agoraphobia, including Humans, Mon Calamari, Duros, Ebruchi, and Selonians. Agoraphobia, ranging from mild to noticeable, was common in Selonians, as they spent the majority of their life in intricate underground tunnels on their homeworld of Selonia. As such, Selonians disliked outer space. In contrast, many generations of the Ebruchi spending time in space was, in fact, the cause for a mild agoraphobia in members of the species. The attachment of the Muun species to their colony world of Muunilinst was believed to render them near-agoraphobic.

Before and during the Imperial era

By 32 BBY, many kilometer-high apartment buildings on the Core Worlds planet Coruscant housed many indoor amenities such as living quarters, hydroponic gardens, and parks. The inhabitants of those habitats, who rarely ventured outside, had emergent agoraphobia.

Ibtisam's starship was shot down above Endor, an event which would leave her adrift in space and agoraphobic.

The Human bounty hunter Gyran had developed a mild form of agoraphobia by some point between 0 ABY and 4 ABY. It manifested during a mission to the Outer Rim Territories planet Sedri to retrieve the Barani List, a compilation of operatives of the Black Sun. Gyran found the planet's oceans intimidating but felt more comfortable in its underwater caves.

In 4 ABY, during the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance pilot Ibtisam fought against the Galactic Empire's 181st Imperial Fighter Wing. During the second oncoming wave of Imperial fighters, Ibtisam's B-wing starfighter was shot down. The Mon Calamari ejected from her starship and drifted aimlessly in space for twelve hours until she was rescued. The event left her agoraphobic; however, her agoraphobia could be contained while within the cockpit of a ship.

Post-Imperial era

The Duros New Republic gunner Krudar and his fellow crew aboard the CR90 corvette FarStar passed through the Kathol Rift, in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim, in 8 ABY. The area, which was known to amplify the effects of mental disorders, greatly intensified Krudar's agoraphobia, which caused him to remain in his quarters in fear. When exiting his quarters, Krudar saw the ship's corridors extending to an infinite degree.

In 18 ABY, the Selonian rebel Dracmus and the Human New Republic captain Han Solo were imprisoned in the same cell of a prison operated by the Human League group on the planet Corellia and successfully escaped from the planet in tandem. The two subsequently attempted to land the primitive Selonian cone ship they were traveling in onto the surface of Selonia with the intent to resolve the disputes between the rebellious Selonian Hunchuzuc Den and the radicalist Overden. With Dracmus in command of the vessel, Solo began to repair the ship in order to prepare for atmospheric re-entry. As the ship neared the atmosphere and Solo began to rush the repairs, Dracmus started to panic due to an onset of agoraphobia and was instructed by the captain to be patient.

Behind the scenes

Agoraphobia first appeared in the 1995 novel Showdown at Centerpoint, written by Roger MacBride Allen as the third entry in the Star Wars: The Corellian Trilogy. In the real world, agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder.
