Alsakan Mosaics

Description

The Alsakan Mosaics were a spectacular artwork at one point located on the Core Worlds planet Alsakan. Made out of gleaming tiles, the mosaic featured a centerpiece located in the central square of the old city of Rucapar. From there, five lanes of tile radiated outward and stretched to the summits of five equidistant mountains.

History

A replica of the Alsakan Mosaics was displayed as part of the exhibit "Wonders of the Galaxy" (pictured) in the Figg & Associates Art Museum.

The centerpiece of the Alsakan Mosaics was destroyed during the 14,450 BBY confrontation known as the Cleansing of Rucapar. The event was a part of the Third Alsakan Conflict, the third of a fourteen-millennia-long series of wars over political control of the Galactic Republic between Alsakan, the Republic's capital world Coruscant, and their respective allies.

After the destruction of the mosaic's centerpiece, only traces of the artwork remained, although it was immortalized as one of the Twenty Wonders of the Galaxy—a list of spectacular, antique artificial objects that the historian Vicendi compiled in 10,000 BBY for the publication Arturum Galactinum. At some point between 1 ABY and 3 ABY, a section of the Alsakan Mosaics was also represented by a replica that covered the floor at "Wonders of the Galaxy," an exhibit of the Figg & Associates Art Museum in the Cloud City settlement of the Outer Rim Territories planet Bespin.

Behind the scenes

The Alsakan Mosaics were introduced in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry. Wallace noted in his personal blog that he particularly enjoyed creating names for those of the Twenty Wonders of the Galaxy that were original to the book, which included the mosaic. The Alsakan Mosaics made their first appearance in a replica form in The Jewel of Yavin, a 2014 adventure supplement for Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Edge of the Empire roleplaying game system.
