Asar was an exceedingly bright blue dwarf star in the Ilum system, in the 7G sector of the Unknown Regions. Asar was orbited by Ilum, an airless planet further away in the system, at least four other planets, and a cloud of comets which was located roughly the same distance away from Ilum as Ilum was from Asar. On Ilum, Asar only rose every nineteen days. The sunlight from Asar was used on Ilum to open a ice-covered entrance in the Jedi Temple on the planet.
At some point prior to 34 ABY, Ilum was fitted with the Starkiller Base superweapon by the First Order and the planet eventually moved into the Starkiller Base system, where it was destroyed and collapsed into a star.
Asar was first mentioned, albeit indirectly, in "The Gathering," the sixth episode of the fifth season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which first aired on November 3, 2012. Asar originally first appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 2001 book Jedi Quest: Path to Truth, written by Jude Watson. It was first identified in the new canon continuity by the 2016 reference book Nexus of Power, and Asar's first appearance in canon came with the release of the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019.
