During a strike on a Black Sun facility, Red Leader Commander Mirith Sinn learned of Kir Kanos' captivity by Grappa the Hutt, after his capture by the Zanibar while rescuing Sinn on Xo. After destroying Black Sun's cloning facility, Sinn and her force proceeded to Genon to rescue Kanos in turn.
Working with Black Sun, Grappa had abducted Feena D'Asta, and created a clone to take her place on the Imperial Interim Ruling Council, in the very facilities destroyed in Mirith Sinn's raid. Grappa was contacted by Underlord Y'ull Acib, enraged by the loss of Black Sun's cloning facilities and the absence of his subordinate Macus Kayniph, who unbeknownst to Acib had been killed by the Hutt in a fit of rage. To Grappa's consternation, the Underlord announced his departure for Genon and demanded that Kayniph be held for questioning.
Meanwhile, acting as a go-between for the Zanibar's attempt to claim the imperial bounty on Kir Kanos, Grappa had promised Zzzanmxl, their leader, nine tenths of the substantial reward, adding to his existing debt to the group.
Taken by surprise after his communication with Y'ull Acib, Grappa the Hutt was confronted by a group of New Republic pilots led by Commander Sinn. Grappa was surprised to see Tav Kennede, who he had employed, within their number, with Kennede revealing his true allegiance to Kir Kanos.
Sinn demanded that Grappa turn over Kanos and D'Asta, ordering X-wing pilot Green Leader to make an attack run on Grappa's fortress at the Hutt's resistance. Conceding to the New Republic's demands, Grappa was further humiliated in being imprisoned in the cell in which Kir Kanos had been held, lamenting the consequences of his failures to both Black Sun and the Zanibar.
Sinn's group departed for Ord Cantrell, the capital of the Imperial Interim Ruling Council and the location of a battle between the forces of Baron Ragez D'Asta, Feena D'Asta's father, and Emperor Xandel Carivus.
Grappa was released from his cell by Schmood, a Yuzzum member of his court, discovering that Sol Mon and his pirates had abandoned him, and that his murder of Macus Kayniph had been revealed to Y'ull Acib by Dengar. With Black Sun closing in, the Hutt attempted to flee, only to be taken by the Zanibar for his failure to procure Kanos' bounty, to be used in their sacrificial ritual.
