A barge driver was a specialized bulk freighter used to haul large amounts of cargo across the galaxy. Barge drivers generally consisted of a bridge and living quarters connected to a separate engineering section by a narrow boom, with a space beneath in which a large modular cargo container could be attached, allowing ships of this type to collect and off-load freight very rapidly. The Corellian Engineering Corporation BD-27 Transport was one type of barge driver active during the Galactic Civil War.
