A carbon-freezing chamber was used to encase objects, and in some cases individuals, in carbonite. The gas-processing vanes of the floating city Cloud City, located on the gas giant Bespin, each contained a carbon-freeze chamber, which used a mixture of carbonite and Bespin-mined tibanna gas for flash-freeze preservation. Ships such as Slave I and the Razor Crest had these chambers installed in their cargo holds.
Darth Vader waits for Luke Skywalker on Bespin
During the Clone Wars, Jedi General Anakin Skywalker had himself, his master Obi-Wan Kenobi, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and their team of clone troopers encased in carbonite at the Jedi Temple. They were able to smuggle themselves past Lola Sayu's defense fleet in order to infiltrate the Citadel to rescue Jedi Master Even Piell and Captain Wilhuff Tarkin.
A Figg and Associates Class-3 CFC in Cloud City was used by the Galactic Empire to encase the Rebel smuggler Han Solo after the Battle of Hoth, whose frozen form was then handed off to the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Darth Vader later tried to capture Luke Skywalker in carbonite, having tested the equipment on Solo, but was unsuccessful. With Bespin under Imperial occupation, the Empire began following Vader's example of freezing prisoners in carbonite.
During the return mission to Cloud City, Leia Organa would be frozen in carbonite herself. However, she and numerous other frozen prisoners were rescued when Skywalker used the Force to activate the unfreezing controls.
