A chief warrant officer did not have a specific task as other ranks such as Admiral did, but instead specialized in a field which other crew members had little or no knowledge of or experience with. Although the chief warrant officer had similar functions to the warrant officer, the chief warrant officer was able to oversee more delicate operations that might require more familiarity with the system(s) in question. The chief warrant officer was usually very skilled in their area of expertise and was tasked with overseeing the work of regular warrant officers.
An example of a notable chief warrant officer was Xiong Wong, the head of electronic countermeasures on the New Hope.
