Chiss uniforms were a type of clothing used by the Ascendancy military, notably including the Chiss Defense Force and the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet.
As with other Chiss officers, Thrawn's uniform had a shoulder patch bearing his family's insignia.
Chiss uniforms had shoulder patches bearing the insignia of their owner's Chiss family, as well as insignia pins on their collar indicating the owner's military rank, a military shoulder belt, and an utility belt holding a comlink. In the case of cadets, the pins were absent as they had no official rank yet, although the family shoulder patch was still present.
Chiss uniforms were colored black for cadets and officers below flag rank, which began at the rank of Commodore. Upon promotion to flag officer, a Chiss officer was stripped of their family ties, with the Supreme Admiral declaring "The Ascendancy is your family." At that point, flag officers received new white uniforms whose shoulder patch insignia was now the symbol of the Chiss Ascendancy. As with those below flag rank, flag officers' white uniforms bore insignia pins indicating their military rank. In the case of Eli Vanto, a rare human alien in the service of the Chiss Ascendancy, his black uniform also bore the family shoulder patch of the Ascendancy. The uniforms were designed for absorbing energy and had armor plating, protecting the wearer from blaster fire. A holster on the right hip carried a charric, while the one on the left carried a combat stick.
During his investigations on Batuu, Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo wore a black uniform with a burgundy patch on one shoulder and insignia pins on the collar. That uniform absorbed much of the energy of blaster bolts, impressing the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. The burgundy shoulder patch bore the sunrise insignia of Thrawn's Mitth family, and the silver insignia pins denoted the rank of Senior Captain.
