Clat, also known as Clat the Shamer, was a mutant empath working on behalf of the Guild of Vindicators following the formation of the Galactic Empire. Clat's empathic abilities allowed him to peer into a person's past and see the acts they felt the most guilt about, and then torment them with these memories to the point of suicide. Clat attempted to use these powers in an attempt on the life of the Sith Lord Darth Vader, only to be killed himself.
A male mutant empath, Clat "the Shamer" was a member of the order known as the Guild of Vindicators during the era of the Galactic Civil War. By that time, Clat had mastered the arcane use of his empathic abilities to identify the acts an opponent felt guiltiest about and tormenting them with their memory, causing such deep trauma that his victims often committed suicide. During the war, Clat was contracted by Lady Dhol of Cheelit to assassinate the Sith Lord Darth Vader, whom Dhol lured to Cheelit's Hive Palace partially through a challenge in the strategy game firepath. Clat used his empathic abilities to easily move through Vader's complement of stormtrooper guards to infiltrate the palace, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Clat entered their game room during the middle of their firepath contest, but found that he had no such hold over the Sith Lord's conscience. Instead of succumbing to his own dark memories, Vader simply activated the firepath space Clat stood upon, and immolated the man.
A skilled empath, Clat the Shamer had the unique ability to use his empathic skills to peer into a target's history and pick out the moments and deeds they felt guiltiest about, forcing them to relive the memory against their will. This allowed Clat, who typically did not carry a weapon, to face down a number of armed enemies—the impact of his ability was so powerful that he could compel his foes to kill themselves. Clat was unmerciful towards his enemies, but held particular animus towards Darth Vader, considering his crimes monumental compared to those of the average Imperial ground troop.
Clat appeared in Dark Lord's Conscience, a comic story written by Alan Moore and illustrated by John Stokes, and originally released in 1982's The Empire Strikes Back Monthly 155.
