Like the Grand Army of the Republic, Clone Intelligence was composed of soldiers cloned from the genetic template of Jango Fett and trained to serve the Galactic Republic. In contrast to the standard infantry trooper of the Grand Army, Clone Intelligence units were trained to support the Republic Military through espionage operations which involved tracking high-value Separatist targets such as General Grievous. Additionally, they provided the Grand Army with surveillance reports on experimental weapons developed by the Confederacy military.

Clone Intelligence personnel served in the Grand Army of the Republic since the early days of the Clone Wars. In 22 BBY, the Confederacy of Independent Systems Navy utilized the newly-constructed Subjugator-class heavy cruiser Malevolence in its campaign against the Galactic Republic Navy. At the time, the Republic had limited information pertaining to the new warship, although Clone Intelligence was able to learn that the Malevolence made a priority of killing survivors who witnessed its capabilities.

Search for Grievous

General Grievous was a high-value target hunted by Clone Intelligence.

With the destruction of the Malevolence, its former commanding officer, General Grievous, became the target of an organized search conducted by Clone Intelligence. Though they succeeded in tracking the cyborg general as far as the Balmorra system, Grievous ultimately managed to elude the clone operatives before the Republic could act on their information.

Locating Grievous

In 19 BBY, the Republic intercepted a partial transmission from the Utapau system in the Outer Rim Territories. Using this information, Clone Intelligence traced Grievous' location to the planet Utapau. Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine revealed their findings to Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, who informed the High Council of the Jedi Order as well. Determined to bring an end to the galaxy-wide Clone Wars, the Jedi Masters reacted to Clone Intelligence's report with swift and decisive action, dispatching Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi to destroy Grievous.

Clone Intelligence continued to monitor the situation on Utapau as a battle ensued between Republic clones and Separatist droids. "Tech"—one of the CT-99 clones who served in Clone Force 99—learned of the Battle of Utapau from the report made by Clone Intelligence, which he discovered through the Republic's encrypted communications network. At the time, Tech and his squad were assisting Jedi General Depa Billaba's forces during the Conquest of Kaller. Despite losing legions of battle droids over the course of the conflict, under Grievous' leadership the Separatist Droid Army continued to fight in several star systems, mounting a "desperate and brutal counterattack," even as Republic forces secured more victories across the galaxy. The battlefront on Kaller involved heavy fighting between the Republic and Separatists. Billaba requested the Republic to send reinforcements while her clones struggled to keep the droids from overrunning their position.

"Tech," a member of Clone Force 99, discovered Clone Intelligence's report on Utapau while listening to encrypted comm chatter.

Although Billaba's troops defeated the droids with the assistance of Clone Force 99, they still had to contend with another Separatist battalion, causing the general to inquire on the status of her reinforcements. She learned from Clone Sergeant "Hunter" that her battalion would not receive supplemental units as they had been redirected to the Republic capital of Coruscant, leaving only the sergeant's squad for Billaba to rely on. Tech, having discovered Clone Intelligence's report, realized that the Separatists were on the brink of defeat, making reinforcements unnecessary. Clone Captain CC-10/994 "Grey" countered the experimental clone's assertion by noting the incoming battalion of battle droids. Tech explained to Billaba's clone trooper officer that his source was the encrypted comm chatter through which he discovered that Clone Intelligence had been reporting on the battle between Kenobi and Grievous on Utapau.

The newest addition to Clone Force 99, CT-1409 "Echo," came to the same conclusion as Tech, both having deduced from Clone Intelligence's report that the capture or death of General Grievous had the potential to end the Clone Wars since the Separatist command structure and the droid armies relied on the cyborg warlord's leadership. Although Billaba found the clones' theory intriguing, she remained focused on the task of Kaller for the Republic. As Billaba's forces prepared to launch a counterattack against the Separatists, Captain Grey received a holographic message from Chancellor Palpatine instructing him to execute Order 66. The captain and the clones under his command complied as a result of their programming, killing the Jedi Master who had served as their general for years, but not before she ordered her Padawan, Caleb Dume to flee.
