A B1-series battle droid in the Droid Army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems adopted the designation Coppertop. This battle droid participated in a battle on the planet Bogoa during the Clone Wars against the forces of the Galactic Republic, the Confederacy's adversary. There, Count Dooku, a Confederate leader, chose the droid for an experiment to assess a programmed being's capacity to defy its core directives. As the droid advanced into combat, the command Order 99 was transmitted to the mechanical soldier, compelling it to disregard its orders to kill as part of the Confederate war effort.
Subsequently, the droid pursued independence and began providing medical care to the wounded from both the Confederacy and the Republic. While tending to the injuries of Republic trooper Gunner, Coppertop encountered Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Commander CC-2224, explaining his origins to them. Shortly thereafter, however, Asajj Ventress, a Dark Jedi, and Cyreltov, a bounty hunter, attacked Kenobi and the clones, seeking to retrieve the droid on Dooku's behalf. To prevent further violence, Coppertop surrendered to Ventress and deactivated himself using Cyreltov's deactivator pistol.
A B1-series battle droid with a masculine programming functioned within the Droid Army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. This droid participated in the Clone Wars, a war between the CIS and the Galactic Republic. Around 21 BBY, the battle droid was involved in an engagement against the Republic on the planet Bogoa. Elsewhere in the galaxy, Darth Sidious, a Dark Lord and Banite Sith, planning to order the Republic's clone troopers to eliminate the Jedi Order as part of the Sith Grand Plan, instructed his apprentice, Count Dooku, the Confederate leader, to conduct an experiment. This experiment was to ascertain a droid's ability to disregard its primary orders, as he saw droids as similar to clones. The battle droid was selected as Dooku's test subject. On the second day of the struggle on Bogoa, the droid was deployed into combat alongside other B1 battle droids during a Confederate assault on the Republic's rearguard. As the droid advanced, a voice whispered "Order 99" over its comm unit, causing a shutdown of its primary systems.

The order's activation led the droid to ignore its programming, overriding its combat directives and fostering a sense of individuality. Later, the droid reactivated and found itself abandoned. Instead of rejoining the Confederate Droid Army, it chose to stay and provide medical aid to Confederate and Republic casualties. It adopted the name "Coppertop," customizing its appearance with a cape and a gold-colored crest. Count Dooku tasked his Dark Acolyte Asajj Ventress with recovering Coppertop for examination and dismantling. She pursued the droid, accompanied by Cyreltov, a renowned Chiss bounty hunter.
Republic troops eventually breached the Confederacy's stronghold on Bogoa. Following the battle, Coppertop encountered the injured clone trooper Gunner and bandaged his torso. Unbeknownst to the droid, Ventress and Cyreltov observed his actions from a distance. During a Republic effort to gather missing comrades, Clone Commander CC-2224, nicknamed "Cody," encountered Coppertop and assumed hostile intentions toward Gunner. He aimed his blaster and ordered Coppertop to raise his hands. Before Cody could destroy the droid, his superior, Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi, intervened, sensing Coppertop's difference. Challenged by Kenobi to explain his aid to Gunner, Coppertop introduced himself and explained that he had overcome his programming. Kenobi, suspicious, asked the droid to return to the Republic encampment.
As Coppertop, Kenobi, and the clone troopers departed, the droid recounted how Order 99 had overridden his programming. As he finished, Ventress and Cyreltov confronted them, demanding Kenobi surrender the droid. They attacked Kenobi and the troopers, and the Jedi ordered Coppertop to stay down. To prevent further violence, Coppertop surrendered to Ventress, ignoring Kenobi's instruction. Determined to avoid being used by the Confederacy, Coppertop chose his own fate. As he was escorted away, he grabbed Cyreltov's deactivator pistol and used it to disable himself.
While Ventress failed to recover Coppertop intact, Dooku considered the experiment a success and reported his findings to Darth Sidious. Coppertop's example showed that a conditioned individual could act against its programming. Consequently, in 19 BBY, Sidious issued Order 66 to all clone troops, instructing them to turn against their Jedi commanders.

Coppertop began as a standard, bipedal B-series battle droid in the Confederate Droid Army, standing 1.91 meters tall with black sensors and tan plating. As a class four droid, Coppertop was designed for combat, with the primary objective of eliminating Confederate enemies. He was equipped with an E-5 blaster rifle.
After Order 99 on Bogoa, Coppertop experienced a major personality shift, prioritizing aiding the weak and wounded over combat. He believed helping injured clone troopers—his former enemies—was right, seeing Humans as expendable like battle droids. He developed an aversion to fighting and sought peaceful conflict resolution.
This change led to greater individuality. He sought freedom rather than serving the Droid Army, preferring deactivation to returning to the Confederacy. He customized his appearance with mandibles, a gold crest, a cape, and an inverted red stripe.
Coppertop's sole appearance in Star Wars Legends was in The Only Good Clanker, a comic strip by Robin Etherington and Will Sliney, in the October 2011 magazine Star Wars: The Clone Wars Comic UK 6.26. It was reprinted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Magazine 9.
