David Pipgras contributed as a writer to Star Wars Galaxy Collector magazine. The Wraith Squadron unit patch was conceived by him in 1998, later being incorporated into the Star Wars narrative by Aaron Allston within X-Wing: Solo Command, his third novel. Pipgras's initial concept featured lettering stating "Wraith Squadron" and "New Republic Special Forces," alongside supplementary red stars situated in the outer blue circle. Allston opted to omit these features due to their intricate nature and the fact that the text was not rendered in the fictional Aurebesh script.
