Destroyer analog

The destroyer analog, sometimes simply destroyer, was the New Republic codename for a type of warship used by the Yuuzhan Vong.

Characteristics

Typically armed with heavy yaret-kor and swarms of coralskippers carried on external spars, the designation may have primarily indicated ships of the type which the Yuuzhan Vong themselves called Miid Ro'ik. At least some of them were certainly more massive than Imperial-class Star Destroyers.

However, the smaller Vua'spar interdictor Sunulok, which served as the command ship of Warmaster Tsavong Lah, could also be designated as a destroyer analog.

The term may have been created on the model of the Star Destroyer designation, which in standard usage, denoted large capital ships above ~850-900m in length.

History

Two of these ships pursued Remis Vehn's light freighter as it attempted to run the blockade of Yavin 4 at the end of the battle there during the Yuuzhan Vong War. One was torn apart by the explosion of the Idiot's Array, while the other was utterly destroyed by the superlaser aboard the Errant Venture.

Large numbers of destroyer analogs fought in the Battle of the Black Bantha; along with cruiser analogs, they were considered the core of the fleet in this engagement, supported by frigate analogs and corvette analogs; cruisers and destroyers together numbered about 100 ships, perhaps 10% of the complete fleet.

Those destroyer analogs that survived this engagement were presumably also present at the Battle of Coruscant.

The Kur-hashan, the Yuuzhan Vong command ship at the Battle of Esfandia may also have belonged to this class.

At least one destroyer analog fought at the Battle of Bilbringi, where it led the attack on the Mon Mothma.

Behind the scenes

The equation of this class with the Miid Ro'ik is based primarily on the tentative identification of the two "destroyer analog" destroyed at the climax of The New Jedi Order: Edge of Victory I: Conquest with the two large warships at the heart of the Yuuzhan Vong squadron when they initially arrive at Yavin 4 earlier in the novel.

However, the use of the terms "corvette analog", "frigate analog", "destroyer analog" and "cruiser analog" together to describe the fleet at the Battle of the Black Bantha in The New Jedi Order: Star by Star suggests that these designations are based on terminology of the Galactic Empire and New Republic. This would mean that "destroyer analog" implies a ship with similar size and capabilities to a Star Destroyer, further reinforcing the identification of the type with the Miid Ro'ik.

The identification of Sunulok as a "destroyer analog" appears in The New Jedi Order: Star by Star.

Kur-hashan is also described alternatively as a "destroyer" and a "warship" throughout the course of The New Jedi Order: Force Heretic III: Reunion.

The New Jedi Order: The Final Prophecy reveals that at least some destroyer analogs boasted a heavier overall tonnage than Imperial Star Destroyers.
