Dithanune's name was introduced via a mention of the "Dithanune needle beast" in Cracken's Rebel Operatives, a 1994 West End Games sourcebook published for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The section mentioning the creature was authored by Craig Robert Carey with J. Michael Denbo. 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia subsequently established Dithanune as a distinct planet. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Dithanune system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square R-8.
