Emil Graf first appeared in the Tales of Wild Space back-up story of Star Wars Adventures (2017) 1, "Stop, Thief!," written by Cavan Scott with art by Jon Sommariva, Sean Parsons and Charlie Kirchoff. The character was revealed to be the grandson of Milo Graf, a character from the Adventures in Wild Space chapter book series, some of which were also written by Scott. Similarly to his grandfather, Emil owns a Kowakian monkey-lizard as a pet. His starship, the Star Herald comes from the chapterbook series as well, where it was a ship originally owned by a former Imperial.
Scott named him after an editor of the Adventures in Wild Space chapter book series, Emil Fortune.
