In 0 BBY, the Alliance managed to destroy the Galactic Empire's planet-killing superweapon, the Death Star, in the Yavin system. During the ceremony held to honor the Heroes of Yavin at the Great Temple, Torg served as a Rebel Honor Guard, standing in front of the audience room's entrance.
The character of Gale Torg was inspired by Galen Torg, a Rebel trooper introduced in Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope. However, as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story already included a prominent character, Galen Walton Erso, with that first name, Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide author Pablo Hidalgo decided to change Torg's first name.
