The Guardians were a military organization in the Unknown Regions, dedicated to the protection of Xaxax artifacts, an extinct sentient species and were led by Klaxus.
At one time in the distant past, possibly even predating the Galactic Republic, the Xaxax were a technologically advanced species that created many strange and powerful devices. After their extinction, a number of their creations were left behind, scattered across the Unknown Regions. Among them were cures for deadly diseases, communication devices, a hidden space station, and an entire world the Xaxax were rumored to have created.
After their extinction, the Guardians were brought together to protect the advanced technology that they left behind, and to ensure it was not used for evil. Though they were once a proud and honorable organization, over thousands of years they grew corrupt and greedy, jealously guarding the secrets of the Xaxax. They looted the artificial world the Xaxax had created, stealing all they could. The Guardians also split up the power core of the Xaxax's space station, using one of the pieces to power their largest ship. They used the space station as a center of study, as well as a vault to keep their stolen artifacts.
A small number of Guardians secretly rebelled against the organization's greed, wishing it would go back to its founding ideals.
