A heat detector was a type of sensor. A heat detector functioned by examining energy, such as particles of heat, emitted by another source. Industrial Automaton's R2-series astromech droids were equipped with heat detectors as part of their standard sensor package.
Imperial Stormtroopers were capable of tracking droids with heat detectors due to the heat particles emitted by droid power cells
