The Jedi were often known to travel to the planet Ilum as Padawans to find a Ilum Crystal during a ritual called "The Gathering." The Padawans would enter the Crystal Cave and locate their crystals using the Force before bringing it back to the front gate.
It was said by pirate captain Hondo Ohnaka that the amount of credits that a Ilum Crystal was worth was enough to make a man rich.
