The uniform varied slightly depending upon what project the wearer was attached to. The kyber crystal research team at the Tarkin Initiative base on Eadu wore a version of the uniform with the insignia of the Tarkin Initiative in black over the left breast and the back of the right shoulder. Scientists working with Moff Gideon's dark trooper program wore the coveralls with the emblem of the Imperial Department of Military Research.
A similar boilersuit was worn by at least one Imperial nurse on the Death Star. It bore an unidentified symbol on the breast and no insignia on the shoulders. Beneath her uniform, the nurse wore a blue shirt.
During the time of the New Republic, a similar uniform was worn by medical assistants within the Re-Integration Institute. It had a darker blue yoke and bore the red sigil on the left shoulder.
This uniform first appeared in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and was subsequently used in Chapter 12: The Siege of The Mandalorian, which aired November 20, 2020.
The symbol that appears on the coveralls of Gideon's scientists is identical to the insignia for the Imperial Department of Military Research used in Star Wars Legends; it has therefore been assumed that it symbolizes the same thing in Canon.
