Irontrees first appeared in the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. They were first identified in the accompanying reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary.
In the 2020 art book The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, co-production designer Kevin Jenkins stated that the irontrees were planted twenty or thirty years prior in comparison to the one hundred years that big trees needed to grow, placing the irontrees' plantation around 15 ABY or 5 ABY.
