Justin R. Chin is a writer and artist. While working for LucasArts, Chin wrote the storyline and acted as lead artist for Star Wars: Dark Forces and Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. The Expanded Universe elements of Kyle Katarn, Dark troopers and various weapons such as the Bryar pistol, are credited to him.
Chin had worked as animator, art director and writer for several video games of Accolade, Inc. and other companies. In his previous experiences, he had seen until joining the Star Wars: Dark Forces team in December, 1993.
While initially Dark Forces was conceived as a story that followed the established canon, Chin thought that the 3-d engine could tell new stories, and described the original idea about "a special force of Stormtroopers" to Ray Gresko and Daron Stinnett. Believing that they needed a "single clear vision" from the start on which to work, he produced the first design document describing the characters, and a layout of 32 missions, each with a different objective, and set on a different planet, with its own look at feel. He provided pencil art concept sketches, which were further elaborated on by the computer artists.
Focused on the game's look and feel, he treated the game as an action film, and spent some time studying video cassettes with films such as Die Hard and James Bond, after which he produced some maps, puzzles and situations the action hero had to survive, which he then forwarded to the level designers.
He currently works at Telltale games as an executive producer.
