The Kardavan penitents were a group that originated in the Kardava system of the Mid Rim's Sevastol sector. The group's membership included Humans. Several penitents devoted their entire lives to alleviating the suffering experienced by individuals who were complete strangers to them. At some point by 27 BBY, the Kaminoan geneticist Hali Ke interviewed and psychoanalized those penitents in an attempt to understand the various Human mental processes giving rise to viciousness as well as kindness and altruism that emerged from the properties of their genetic code. Ke later noted their encounter with the Kardavan penitents in an internal memorandum composed that year.
The Kardavan penitents were originally meant to be introduced in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart; however, the section that would have mentioned the group was cut before the book's release. The information regarding the penitents was later released in 2014 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles published on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and Del Rey editor Erich Schoeneweiss containing various cut content from the book.
