The Lontars were a sentient species native to the Lontar system of the north-western portion of the Colonies Region. Several hundred years before the end of the Galactic Republic, the Lontars attacked Batorine, a neighboring planet in the Colonies and the homeworld of the Blood Carvers, a feudal, reclusive species that was extremely adept at assassination.
The Lontars defeated the Blood Carvers so completely that their target species was driven almost to the point of extinction; the Galactic Senate, however, intervened in the hostilities and forced the Lontars to halt their onslaught. Although some Blood Carvers remained on Batorine following the Lontars' cessation of hostilities, most of the survivors were taken to Coruscant, the capital of the Republic, where they were kept in seclusion, finally joining the Republic in 110 BBY.
The Lontars were created by Greg Bear for his novel Rogue Planet, published by Del Rey in 2000. They later received a mention in The Essential Guide to Alien Species, written by Ann Margaret Lewis and published in 2001. The Essential Atlas, published in 2009, provided the location of the Lontar home star system, placing it in the same grid as Batorine.
The timing of the Lontars' assault on the Blood Carvers is somewhat unclear. In Rogue Planet, Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker describes the conflict as occurring "hundreds of years ago," and the Blood Carver Ke Daiv describes his people as being "swallowed by the Republic, taken in after [their] defeat." In The Essential Guide to Alien Species, however, the Blood Carvers are said to join the Republic only in 110 BBY, a mere 81 years before Skywalker's conversation.
