Lowbacca's lightsaber was a molten bronze colored Jedi lightsaber constructed by the Wookiee Jedi Knight Lowbacca. He created the weapon using computer components found in the Great Temple on the moon on Yavin 4. These components included a focusing lens and an enhancement jewel that he used as the lightsaber crystal. When ignited, the blade was similar in shape to a club and nearly as wide as the 15-year-old Jaina Solo's arm.
After Lowbacca, Jacen Solo and Jaina Solo's abduction by the Second Imperium's Shadow Academy and their rescue by Tenel Ka Djo and Luke Skywalker in 23 ABY, Skywalker determined that his four young students were ready to construct their own lightsabers. After the lessons the students had learned at the Shadow Academy about taking the weapons seriously, he wanted them to be prepared for the growing threat of the Second Imperium.
Because of his passion for computers, Lowbacca chose to search the former Rebel control room in the Jedi Praxeum's Great Temple for components to use in his lightsaber. In the control room he found a flat focusing lens and a spherical enhancement jewel to use as the crystal in his lightsaber. After assembling the components he needed, Lowbacca aided Tenel Ka in searching a volcano for an appropriate crystal for her own lightsaber before making the final tune ups to the weapon.
Lowbacca's lightsaber first appeared in the 1996 novel Young Jedi Knights: Lightsabers written by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta, in which the series' four main characters constructed their first lightsabers. The lightsaber was first pictured on the cover of Young Jedi Knights: Darkest Knight, the next book in the Young Jedi Knights series published later the same year.
