A monitor pad was a part of a face breather like the one used by Deeve, a scout of the Bureau of Scouting and Exploration Services. It could be activated by flicking the tongue over it, and at doing so, it initiated a quick analysis of the atmosphere, saying whether it was suitable to be breathed or not.
