Moon of Alderaan

The moon of Alderaan was a moon in orbit around the planet Alderaan.

History

During the reign of the Galactic Republic and Empire, a single moon orbited the planet of Alderaan, a Core World. At night, the light cast by the moon lit up the planet's surface, providing illumination for thranta riders including a young Leia Organa, Princess of Alderaan.

Some time after 7 BBY, the moon was shattered, its remains orbiting the asteroid field known as the Graveyard created by the destruction of Alderaan in 0 BBY by the Imperial Death Star battlestation, which was mistaken for a moon in the Alderaan system by the young Jedi Luke Skywalker and the smuggler Han Solo shortly after the disaster.

Later, the moon would be invoked by Leia Organa in an utterance of frustration towards her Rebel superior Mon Mothma.

Behind the scenes

Though the 1976 novelization of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope indicates that Alderaan did not have a moon, 1995's The Illustrated Star Wars Universe and 2002's "The Princess Leia Diaries" depicted a moon over the planet. In 2003, the Wizards of the Coast roleplaying supplement Coruscant and the Core Worlds stated both that Alderaan had no moons, and that the moon's remains orbited the Graveyard. 2009's The Essential Atlas reaffirmed that Alderaan possessed a moon, as did the 2011 novel The Old Republic: Deceived and 2013 comic Star Wars 12.
