A popular theory among xenoarborists as to how the senoti made its way to Endor was that one or both of the Canistel AgriStar freighters that had been lost in the Moddell sector had been carrying seeds of the tree and had crashed. Endor's conditions were not ideal for the senoti; New Canistel's alkaline soil allowed the trees to fare far better. By 3 ABY, very few senoti trees remained on Endor.
New Canistel was first mentioned in the article "Endor and the Moddell Sector," which was published in the ninth issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine on February 22, 2002. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the New Canistel system, and therefore the world itself, in grid square P-7.
