In some insectoid species like the lyleks of Ryloth, a queen was a female from whose eggs an entire colony developed. Similarly, large female krayt dragons on Tatooine were also referred to as queens.
In the case of the sentient Geonosians, the queen of a hive could also be the queen in the political sense, a ruler of her people. In some hives, however, the queen simply produced offspring while the aristocratic caste ruled.
Like the Geonosians, the sentient Colicoids also had queens.
