Located along the southeastern edge of the Tythos Ridge, the Rift was a deep canyon that stretched for a thousand kilometers and reached over a kilometer deep in some areas. The Rift and the surrounding Riftlands were wracked with volcanic and seismic activity, marked with jagged spires and dangerous quicksand pits. It was a wild place, far from the cities. Difficult to reach and challenging to navigate once there, the Rift was a place where many Je'daii went to hone their survival skills. Within the Rift was the Abyss of Ruh, a mysterious region where pit-spawned beasts were found that were unique to this area. This was where the Je'daii found the creatures on which the scientists of Anil Kesh experimented.
In 25,793 BBY Xesh, a Force Hound of the Infinite Empire deliberately sabotaged his master's ship called the Devourer into the Abyss of Ruh, deep within the Rift. The surge of deaths associated with the crash alerted all Je'daii to the foreign presence on the world, as well as stirring a massive Force storm that would rage across the entire planet. Warned of the crash through a vision sent by Xesh, the Je'daii Journeyers Shae Koda, Tasha Ryo, and Sek'nos Rath all travelled immediately to the Rift to investigate. When the three Journeyers met at the crash site they began searching the wreckage of the alien ship and discovered an escape pod carrying the stranger from their vision: the Force Hound Xesh. Drawing their blades, the Je'daii were shocked as Xesh's Forcesaber easily cut through their durasteel blades. Despite the loss of their weapons, the three Je'daii's mastery of the Force outmaneuvered Xesh and Koda was able to take the Forcesaber from his grasp. Unarmed and winded, the Je'daii forced Xesh deeper into the Rift towards the dangerous Abyss of Ruh. While tracking the Force Hound, the three Je'daii experienced hallucinations brought on by the dark energies inside the Abyss. Overcoming the effects through teamwork, the trio was able to locate Xesh as he battled a saarl. Making a final stand, the trio attempted to hold off the beast but were unable to turn on the Forcesaber Koda had confiscated from Xesh. At the urging of her fellows, Koda relinquished possession of the saber to Xesh who ultimately killed the worm. Soon after, the Je'daii Master Quan-Jang arrived, having determined that Xesh was the cause of the storm threatening Tython and struck him down with lightning so that he could be placed under arrest by Rangers Hawk Ryo and Rori Fenn.
