On the planet Horain, a battle rages on between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Captain Rex is in need of assistance as the battle droids close in. At the last second, Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives to save him. Kenobi and Rex cut through the attacking droids as they prepare to make their way to the Republic Evacuation Point. A Droideka is about to shot Kenobi but Rex jumps in front of the Jedi and takes the blaster bolts instead. Kenobi destroys the other droids but one of the blaster bolts deflects off his lightsaber and hits a battle droid in the processor, causing it to malfunction. The droid is confused with what was going on and why the battle droids are attacking Rex and Kenobi. The droid doesn't think it is fair and starts to take out his fellow battle droids. Rex gives B1-0516 the nickname, "Bats" and the droid officially joins them.
In order to get past the enemy, Bats lies to his fellow B1-series battle droids and told them that Kenobi and Rex are his prisoners. Bats then opens fire and defeats the battle droids while Kenobi and Rex escape. But Bats is captured by the CIS who is going to take him for analysis. Rex and Kenobi then formulated a plan to save the droid.
At a CIS building, a T-series tactical droid, orders that Bats is to not be destroyed. Instead the battle droid is to be reprogrammed to his basic program and put back on the battlefield. Bats refuses and destroys the battle droid next to him. He then gets ready to fight the other droids when an armored assault tank breaks through and into the building. A battle droid commander is sent to investigate but he is destroyed by Kenobi who grabs Bats and completes his escape.
At the Republic Evacuation Point, Kenobi, Rex, and Bats arrive in the tank which catches Jedi General Anakin Skywalker off guard. Bats introduces himself to everyone and Rex starts to like the battle droid as much as Kenobi does.
In "Roger Roger," Obi-Wan Kenobi mentions returning to the Resolute, which was destroyed in the Clone Wars episode "Nightsisters." This implies that the story is set before that episode. However, the clone troopers in the comic are depicted with Phase II clone trooper armor. Phase II armor was not introduced until the episode "Water War," and Captain Rex did not adopt Phase II armor until the events of "Darkness on Umbara." Both of these episodes are chronologically set after "Nightsisters."
