The 1991 Star Wars video game manual called the insects in the game "Flying Insectoids", but a guide to the game in an issue of Nintendo Power magazine used the term "Sand Flies." The sand fly was later mentioned in R. A. Salvatore's 1999 novel, The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime. It was again mentioned in the 2011 novel The Old Republic: Deceived and Riptide, both written by Paul S. Kemp.
