Scav droids were a type of droid utilized by the Nihil marauder organization during the High Republic Era. Designed by Zeetar, a Nihil and engineer who became one of the group's three Tempest Runners, scav droids were used in the pirates' raids to collect loot. The droids had crablike bodies and manipulator arms, with which they dismantled machinery. The Nihil employed scav droids on Rekelos, during an attack on the Cyclor Shipyards, and an attack on the Republic Fair on the planet Valo.
The scav droids were designed and engineered to dismantle, salvage, and steal whatever the Nihil needed. Former Tempest Runner Pan Eyta also made use of scav droids, made out of older models of droids due to being low on resources, in the he led after being betrayed by Eye Marchion Ro and fellow Runner Lourna Dee. Despite their primary purpose for disassembly, the slicer Quin was able to force scav droids to repair technology.
Scav droids have their roots in Cavan Scott's first proposed story for The High Republic (2021) 1, where they were wolf-sized droids deployed by the Nihil to pick technology from satellites. They retained the crab-like appearance that would later be canonized. The story's fight scene, which would have seen Keeve Trennis face off against Scav droids in space, would later be reused by Scott for The High Republic (2023) 4.
