Sometime prior to 5000 BBY, a Sith stealth regiment of the old Sith Empire settled the secluded Force nexus of Thule. This special forces unit was drawn to Thule both for its isolated location on the westernmost edges of the Stygian Caldera and for its natural concerted power in the dark side of the Force.
Following the Sith Empire's defeat in the Great Hyperspace War, a small number of Sith refugees and loyalists fled to Thule in an effort to escape the post–Great Hyperspace War counterinvasion, a joint Jedi-Republic invasion of the Sith Empire aimed at eliminating any vestigial threat it posed to the safety of the Republic. Confident that the Empire's defeat at the hands of the Republic would be temporary, the regiment remained in seclusion on Thule, bolstering its ranks with Sith loyalists and training in preparation to serve as an advance force for a resurgent Sith Empire.
The group persisted through the passage of the centuries, maintaining ties with other vestigial groups of Sith loyalists who had similarly survived the collapse of the old Sith Empire. Though their numbers sank significantly in the years that followed, the descendants of the original group continued to pledge themselves to the service of the Sith Lords even into the Imperial Period.
