Skyhooks were orbital space stations tethered to the surface of planets. A skyhook known as Quarzite space station was connected via tethered turbolifts to a transport area located in Quarzite's subterranean caverns, as its surface was strained by incredibly strong atmospheric pressure that could crush starships and flatten beings.
