Squadron leaders, also known as squad leaders, served as the commanding officers for various military formations, including starfighter squadrons. They also led ground-based units, for example, the Alliance to Restore the Republic's special recon squad, famously known as the Shrikes, and even the Imperial forces of the Scarif Deployment.
