Star Wars: Tag & Bink

Origins

The Tag & Bink series of comic books was created by Kevin Rubio. Following the success of Kevin's shorts that appeared in Star Wars Tales, Dark Horse and Lucasfilm commissioned Kevin to do a two-part original series, which became Tag & Bink Are Dead 1 and Tag & Bink Are Dead 2 (often referred to by Kevin as "Tag and Bink Live").

The stories themselves are comedic in nature and based in part on Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead - an award winning play that centers around the lives of two minor characters in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. But in the case of Tag and Bink, we follow two hapless rebels in the Star Wars universe, as they cross paths with every major character, in both the original and new trilogy.

Despite the limited number of issues, Tag and Bink have achieved a cult status in the Star Wars universe. Some have reported the first issue of Tag and Bink has sold as high as $175.00 US in internet auctions, although this may be a hoax as recently ended auctions for these books show them at below cover price.

Behind the scenes

The names Tag and Bink are based on machinations of names found in early drafts of the first Star Wars script (circa 1974) which had names like "Bean" "Camie" "Fixer" et. al. They are based on Kevin Rubio's younger brothers, Craig and Brian.

Tag and Bink are mentioned as possible names for a clone in the Star Wars comics on the Lego website. The clone is met with the reply: "I think that name is taken."
