The attraction was announced at Disney's D23 Expo on August 15, 2015 during a presentation discussing other upcoming attractions. It opened later that year at Disneyland on November 16 and Disney's Hollywood Studios on December 4, then at Shanghai Disneyland on June 16, 2016. The Shanghai version eventually closed in June 2019.
