Talortai

The Talortai were an avian sentient species that possessed feathers and clawed feet. Talortai hailed from Talor, an astronomical object that featured tropics. The species was strong in the Force, and Talortai could use their affinity to navigate the galaxy with precision; however, in the case of the Talortai navigator Udi Dis, their connection to the Force did not extend to the premonition that the Jedi were known for.

Dis, at one point a soldier, left Talor, eventually coming to use his navigation skills in service to the Nihil marauder organization under Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro. By that time, the only possession that he had from his home were the curved wingblades that he carried. Dis accompanied Ro to the frozen planet Rystan, where Kufa, a cousin of Ro, was to take the two of them to the Shrine. Dis, not having experienced the cold growing up in the tropics of Talor, was affected by the temperature.

Talortai were an avian species with claws on their hands and feet, beaked faces, and a body that was covered in feathers. They healed extremely quickly, though it was unknown whether this was a biological ability or a gift granted to them by the Force.

The use of the Talortai's natural Force abilities was considered taboo. They were ruled by a council referred to as the elders, who purposefully kept the Talortai ignorant of the extent of their abilities. Nonconformity was punished severely.

At some point approximately a thousand years before 231 BBY, the Talortai's homeworld of Talor was invaded by the Sith, who saw the Talortai as competition and committed a genocide referred to as the "great cull". The Talortai were reduced to an endangered species and the elders purposefully limited both their population and use of the Force thereafter.

In the new Star Wars canon, Talortai first appeared in the 2021 novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm, written by Cavan Scott. The species previously appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 2006 video game expansion Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption.
