Teng Malar worked as a scavenger on Jakku, a desert planet in the Western Reaches, in the years after the Galactic Civil War. While scavenging a wreck in the Starship Graveyard, home to ships that crashed during the Battle of Jakku, Malar accidentally broke open a hatch and disrupted a nest of steelpeckers. The ferocious avian creatures ripped Malar to shreds within ten minutes. Rey, a fellow scavenger, watched helplessly as she was unable to save Malar.
