In the adventure, the players take on the role of Green squad, part of the Alliance to Restore the Republic's Irregular unit, Reekeene's Roughnecks. Their mission is to investigate Imperial mining operations on Alabash and destroy the installation.
First published in Star Wars Campaign Pack in 1988, "The Heat of Freedom" was later republished in Classic Campaigns in 1994. When the adventure was reprinted, there were several minor changes made to the text. These were:
- Classic Campaigns makes an early note that the alantium that is being mined on the planet is from an automated mining station, which is only revealed later on in the adventure.
- A reference to the Imperial mining complex being equipped with "huge blasters" is changed to being equipped with "mining lasers."
- An expansion on the description of the landing platform is given, with it being lowered into the complex and a portal sealing the bay from above.
