Because there's something seriously wrong with the editor and I am tearing my hair out over this 'aborted by an extension hook' error, here's the article I wrote for the canon edition of the article for the Defender. It's similar to the Legends version because the ship has not appeared anywhere else. I'm keeping this here until such time as I can add it to the Defender's article without being glitched to the point of screaming. Thank you.
The Defender was a Venator-class Star Destroyer that served in the Republic Navy during the Clone Wars. In 22 BBY, the planet of Ryloth was suddenly seized by Separatist forces, and a large Confederate fleet under the command of veteran Neimoidian Captain Mark Tuuk blockaded the world. The Defender served as part of the Republic task force under the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano, to defeat the Confederate blockade.
Upon the arrival of the Defender and a pair of accompanying Venator-class Star Destroyers, the Resolute and the Redeemer, in the Ryloth system, Tuuk was able to lure Republic forces into a trap. The Confederate captain's summoning of hidden reinforcements forced the Venators to withdraw, though not before the Resolute and Defender were heavily damaged, and the Redeemer was destroyed altogether. Regrouping outside of the Ryloth system, Skywalker devised a plan to pilot the Defender into Tuuk's flagship, the Procurer, leaving a chastised Tano to command the Resolute and eliminate the remaining frigates in the blockade. Skywalker and his astromech droid, R2-D2, piloted the Defender into the system and put it on course before fleeing in an escape pod. The Defender, unhindered by the desperate bombardment of the frigates and the Procurer, collided with and destroyed the Separatist flagship, though not before Tuuk managed to flee.
Description At 1,137 meters long, the Defender was a standard Venator-class Star Destroyer manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards. She served in the Grand Army of the Republic's naval wing during the Clone Wars. Her armament consisted of fifty-two laser cannons, eight DBY-827 dual heavy turbolaser turrets, two medium dual turbolaser cannons, four proton torpedo tubes, and six tractor beam projectors. The Defender, as with all ships of her class, had a hyperdrive installed and was fitted with a shield generated. She also featured the standardized dual command towers and eight engines of all Venators, and was fitted with escape pods.
History
Separatist Invasion and First Assault In 22 BBY, the planet of Ryloth was invaded by the Techno Union Foreman Wat Tambor and his forces under the political umbrella of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. This action, perpetrated as part of the ongoing Clone Wars, saw the Twi'lek inhabitants of the planet subjected to harsh rule. Tambor, ruling over the planet with an iron fist, placed veteran captain Mar Tuuk in charge of the Confederate fleet stationed in orbit of the planet and tasked him with defeating the inevitable Republic reprisal. That reprisal came in the form of a trio of Venator-class Star Destroyers, including the Defender, commanded by well-known Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano, who were dispatched to clear the Confederate blockade from Ryloth space and protect an incoming invasion force to be commanded by High Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu. Admiral Wullf Yularen, an accomplished Republic commander and longtime military partner of Skywalker, accompanied the two Jedi and offered tactical advice. When Skywalker's battle group emerged from hyperspace in the Ryloth sustem, they were immediately engaged by what appeared to be a small blockade force consisting of two Munificent-class frigates and the Procurer, a Lucrehulk-class battleship. The Resolute disgorged its complement of BTL-B Y-wing starfighters, headed by Padawan Tano in her personal ship. Tuuk's Vulture droid fighters engaged the Republic squadrons, just as the captain expected; exploiting her youthful arrogance, the Captain's droids encircled the Y-wings as they raced for the command ship, resulting in the near obliteration of the Republic starfighter force. At the same time, Tuuk summoned two pairs of additional Munificent-class frigates to back up his original Lucrehulk-class ship and Munificents already on station. The combined firepower of these capital ships began hammering the Venator-class ships, including the Defender, a barrage enhanced by Tuuk's decision to send squadrons of Vulture droids in kamikaze attacks against the task force.
The Republic battle group, previously overconfident, was now outgunned and outmanuevered. Admiral Yularen ordered a full retreat from the system and commanded that Tano and the remains of her squadron return to the Resolute to provide fighter cover against the Vulture droids. However, Tano's arrogance remained and she disobeyed orders, believing she and her men could reach the Procurer and destroy it, beheading the blockade. Without the assistance of the Padawan's fighters, the Defender suffered heavy damage. After losing most of the ships under her command, Tano mournfully returned to the battle group as the Venators beat a hasty retreat into hyperspace. Behind them, however, the Redeemer had been devastated by the Separatist attacks and disintegrated under the strain as she turned to withdraw.
The remainder of Skywalker's force limped from the battlefield to consolidate their forces and treat the injured. The Defender herself had suffered immense damage, one of her command towers being decapitated and large fires glowing from holes punched in her hull. After conferring with Generals Kenobi and Windu via hologram, Skywalker was given one planetary rotation to breach the blockade, lest the Separatist forces further consolidate their position above and on the surface of Ryloth. General Skywalker devised a plan to evacuate the damaged Defender and pilot the ship with his trusted astromech droid, R2-D2, into the Procurer. The duo would flee the ship in an escape pod as the Resolute, commanded by a chastised and humbled Tano, would enter the system and destroy the six Munificent-class frigates.
After the personnel of the Defender were transferred to the Resolute, Skywalker and R2-D2 began the execution of the scheme and pilot the Defender back into the Ryloth system. Playing off Tuuk's arrogance just as the captain had done to his Padawan, Skywalker lied to the Neimoidian and stated that he intended to surrender himself, his crew and the Defender in exchange for the safe passage of food and medical supplies to Ryloth. Tuuk bought the deception for a moment, but the truth was revealed when the Procurer scanned the Defender and found that Skywalker was the only life-form aboard. As the Separatist commander demanded an explanation for the Jedi's treachery, Skywalker wryly commented that Tuuk could "still keep [his] ship." R2-D2 applied all power to the engines before the duo made their way to an escape pod.
The Procurer and her accompanying flotilla opened fire on the Defender in a desperate attempt to destroy the vessel or change its course. When it became clear that his ship would be destroyed and the engagement concluded along with it, Tuuk hobbled to an escape pod himself, leaving incompetent battle droids in charge of the remnants of the blockade. The Resolute, executing a vertical maneuver and launching starfighters from her hangar, managed to distract and destroy the six Munificent-class frigates. Generals Windu and Kenobi arrived with three Acclamator-class assault ships, ready to land with the invasion forces. Obi-Wan, Skywalker's former master, quipped at the absence of the Redeemer and Defender that he did not want to know where the rest of Anakin's task force was, or why he was in an escape pod.
The destruction of the Confederate blockade, due in part to the sacrifice of the Defender, allowed Kenobi and Windu's ground forces to land on the planet and eventually liberate Ryloth.
Commanders and crew During the first assault on the Confederate blockade over Ryloth, the Defender sustained heavy damage, and its remaining starfighters, supplies, and crew were later transferred to the Resolute for Skywalker's plan to pilot the cruiser into Tuuk's command ship. Skywalker assumed control of the Defender when he and R2-D2 took the Star Destroyer back to the Ryloth system.
The Defender was first mentioned in the reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, released on December 9, 2008. The Star Destroyer made its first appearance in "Storm Over Ryloth," an episode in the first season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series.[3]
An animation error in "Storm Over Ryloth" showed the Defender with both of its command towers intact, just moments after showing the ship with the starboard tower destroyed.
