Due to persistent problems with the editor, specifically an error message indicating that the process was 'aborted by an extension hook,' I am providing the text of the article I composed for the canonical version of the Defender entry. It bears similarities to the Legends version due to the ship's limited appearances. I will retain this text here until I can successfully integrate it into the Defender's article without encountering disruptive glitches. Your understanding is appreciated.
The Defender functioned as a Venator-class Star Destroyer within the Republic Navy throughout the Clone Wars. In 22 BBY, Separatist forces unexpectedly captured the planet Ryloth, leading a substantial Confederate fleet under the leadership of seasoned Neimoidian Captain Mark Tuuk to establish a blockade around the world. The Defender was an integral component of the Republic task force, which was commanded by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano, with the objective of dismantling the Confederate blockade.
Upon the Defender's arrival in the Ryloth system, accompanied by two other Venator-class Star Destroyers, the Resolute and the Redeemer, Tuuk skillfully drew the Republic forces into a carefully planned ambush. The Confederate captain's deployment of concealed reinforcements compelled the Venators to retreat, but not before the Resolute and Defender sustained considerable damage, and the Redeemer was completely obliterated. After regrouping beyond the Ryloth system, Skywalker conceived a strategy to maneuver the Defender into Tuuk's flagship, the Procurer, while assigning a humbled Tano to command the Resolute and neutralize the remaining frigates maintaining the blockade. Skywalker, accompanied by his astromech droid, R2-D2, guided the Defender into the system, setting it on a collision course before evacuating in an escape pod. The Defender, undeterred by the frantic barrage from the frigates and the Procurer, collided with and destroyed the Separatist flagship, although Tuuk managed to escape beforehand.
Description Measuring 1,137 meters in length, the Defender was a standard Venator-class Star Destroyer produced by Kuat Drive Yards. It served in the Grand Army of the Republic's naval branch during the Clone Wars. Its weaponry included fifty-two laser cannons, eight DBY-827 dual heavy turbolaser turrets, two medium dual turbolaser cannons, four proton torpedo tubes, and six tractor beam projectors. The Defender, like all vessels of its class, was equipped with a hyperdrive and a shield generator. It also featured the characteristic dual command towers and eight engines of all Venators, and was equipped with escape pods.
History
Separatist Invasion and Initial Assault In 22 BBY, the planet Ryloth was invaded by Techno Union Foreman Wat Tambor and his forces, operating under the political banner of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. This action, part of the ongoing Clone Wars, resulted in the harsh subjugation of the planet's Twi'lek inhabitants. Tambor, ruling the planet with an iron fist, appointed veteran captain Mar Tuuk to command the Confederate fleet stationed in orbit and tasked him with repelling the anticipated Republic counterattack. This counterattack materialized in the form of three Venator-class Star Destroyers, including the Defender, under the command of renowned Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano. Their mission was to clear the Confederate blockade from Ryloth space and safeguard an incoming invasion force led by High Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu. Admiral Wullf Yularen, a distinguished Republic commander and long-time military associate of Skywalker, accompanied the two Jedi, providing tactical guidance. Upon the emergence of Skywalker's battle group from hyperspace within the Ryloth system, they were immediately confronted by what appeared to be a modest blockade force, consisting of two Munificent-class frigates and the Procurer, a Lucrehulk-class battleship. The Resolute launched its contingent of BTL-B Y-wing starfighters, led by Padawan Tano in her personal craft. Tuuk's Vulture droid fighters engaged the Republic squadrons, precisely as the captain had anticipated; capitalizing on her youthful impetuosity, the Captain's droids encircled the Y-wings as they advanced towards the command ship, nearly annihilating the Republic starfighter force. Simultaneously, Tuuk deployed two additional pairs of Munificent-class frigates to reinforce his original Lucrehulk-class ship and Munificents already in position. The combined firepower of these capital ships commenced a relentless assault on the Venator-class ships, including the Defender, a barrage amplified by Tuuk's decision to dispatch squadrons of Vulture droids on kamikaze runs against the task force.
The Republic battle group, previously exhibiting overconfidence, now found itself outgunned and outmaneuvered. Admiral Yularen issued an order for a complete withdrawal from the system, instructing Tano and the surviving members of her squadron to return to the Resolute to provide fighter cover against the Vulture droids. However, Tano's hubris persisted, and she defied orders, believing that she and her squadron could reach the Procurer and destroy it, thereby decapitating the blockade. Without the support of the Padawan's fighters, the Defender sustained significant damage. After losing the majority of the ships under her command, Tano reluctantly returned to the battle group as the Venators executed a swift retreat into hyperspace. However, the Redeemer, having suffered catastrophic damage from the Separatist attacks, disintegrated under the strain as it attempted to withdraw.
The remaining elements of Skywalker's force retreated from the battlefield to consolidate their resources and attend to the wounded. The Defender herself had incurred extensive damage, with one of her command towers severed and large fires erupting from breaches in her hull. Following consultations with Generals Kenobi and Windu via hologram, Skywalker was granted one planetary rotation to penetrate the blockade, lest the Separatist forces further solidify their position both above and on the surface of Ryloth. General Skywalker formulated a plan to evacuate the damaged Defender and pilot the ship, accompanied by his trusted astromech droid, R2-D2, into the Procurer. The duo would then abandon the ship in an escape pod as the Resolute, now under the command of a chastened and humbled Tano, would enter the system and destroy the six Munificent-class frigates.
After the personnel of the Defender were transferred to the Resolute, Skywalker and R2-D2 commenced the execution of their scheme, piloting the Defender back into the Ryloth system. Exploiting Tuuk's arrogance in the same manner that the captain had exploited his Padawan's, Skywalker falsely informed the Neimoidian that he intended to surrender himself, his crew, and the Defender in exchange for the safe passage of food and medical supplies to Ryloth. Tuuk briefly entertained the deception, but the truth was revealed when the Procurer scanned the Defender and discovered that Skywalker was the sole life-form aboard. As the Separatist commander demanded an explanation for the Jedi's treachery, Skywalker wryly remarked that Tuuk could "still keep [his] ship." R2-D2 diverted all power to the engines before the duo made their way to an escape pod.
The Procurer and its accompanying flotilla unleashed a barrage of fire upon the Defender in a desperate attempt to destroy the vessel or alter its trajectory. Realizing that his ship was doomed and the engagement was nearing its conclusion, Tuuk hastily boarded an escape pod himself, leaving incompetent battle droids in control of the remnants of the blockade. The Resolute, executing a vertical maneuver and launching starfighters from its hangar, successfully distracted and destroyed the six Munificent-class frigates. Generals Windu and Kenobi arrived with three Acclamator-class assault ships, prepared to land with the invasion forces. Obi-Wan, Skywalker's former master, quipped at the absence of the Redeemer and Defender that he did not want to know where the rest of Anakin's task force was, or why he was in an escape pod.
The destruction of the Confederate blockade, facilitated in part by the sacrifice of the Defender, enabled Kenobi and Windu's ground forces to land on the planet and ultimately liberate Ryloth.
Commanders and Crew During the initial assault on the Confederate blockade over Ryloth, the Defender sustained substantial damage, and its surviving starfighters, provisions, and crew were subsequently relocated to the Resolute in preparation for Skywalker's plan to pilot the cruiser into Tuuk's command ship. Skywalker assumed control of the Defender when he and R2-D2 piloted the Star Destroyer back to the Ryloth system.
The Defender was initially referenced in the reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published on December 9, 2008. The Star Destroyer made its inaugural appearance in "Storm Over Ryloth," an episode from the first season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series.
An animation oversight in "Storm Over Ryloth" depicted the Defender with both of its command towers intact, moments after portraying the ship with the starboard tower destroyed.
