This short story, entitled "A Bitter Winter," was penned by Patricia A. Jackson. Its initial publication occurred within the pages of Star Wars Adventure Journal 5, brought to readers by West End Games in February of 1995. Later, it found a digital home in the archives of Hyperspace on April 15 of 2005.
Upon receiving word that an acquaintance of his father is experiencing difficulties, Drake Paulsen journeys to Tatooine. While awaiting the passing of a dust storm, he discovers his vessel encircled by Sandpeople. Among these "raiders" is Tait Ransom, who brings forth the "friend," Toob Ancher, nearing death at the hand of Jabba the Hutt. Toob directs him to set a course toward Redcap, asserting the presence of "the most substantial spice shipment any smuggler has ever encountered." He divulges that Drake's deceased father belonged to the Black Bha'lir, a notorious band of pirates. As Toob's sanity appears to deteriorate, Drake uncovers the reason upon locating another friend, Fahs Oxsor, on Redcap. Ancher is afflicted with "Bitter Winter," a severe psychological disorder. Being in the terminal phase of the illness, the most compassionate act Drake can perform is to end his life. Ancher embarks towards the spice shipment he believes is located in Tyma Canyon, accompanied by Drake. As Ancher's mental state progressively worsens, he ultimately commandeers a Headhunter and engages an Imperial Star Galleon in direct combat. Drake is compelled to collaborate with the Imperials to subdue Toob. Calder, the Imperial captain, presents Drake with a choice: eliminate Ancher, or face the captain doing it himself. With a heavy heart, Drake destroys Ancher's ship. The Imperials permit Drake to depart, and he returns to Redcap to grieve. He concludes that the time has come for him to attempt a Kessel spice run himself.
