Starship sensor array

Starship sensor suites, otherwise referred to as starship sensor arrays, represented one of the most vital systems present on any starship. Without the employment of sensors, spacecraft were rendered incapable of navigation, identifying nearby obstructions, spotting ships or projectiles coming towards them, or mapping interstellar phenomena. Utilizing a range of sensor types, sensor arrays obtained data regarding the surrounding environment or space, which was then processed and analyzed by a sophisticated computer for use by the crew.
Every starship sensor array incorporated some form of long-distance sensor device, a data-collecting computer, and a display that presented the data to the pilot. However, larger vessels typically featured multiple sensor arrays and various sensor types, including active sensors, passive-mode sensors, focus-mode sensors, search-mode sensors, full-spectrum sensors, and short-range electrophoto receptors. These receptors scanned frequencies ranging from ultraviolet to infrared radiation and were frequently utilized in targeting computers. Additional energy receptors specialized in detecting energy emissions originating from sources like engines, communications, heat, and weapon discharges. Certain sensors were specifically engineered to detect organic life forms. Crystal gravfield traps had the ability to locate cloaked vessels and other gravitational abnormalities, while hyperwave signal interceptors scanned for hyperspace disturbances, for example Cronau radiation.
On warships, a sensor officer was assigned to monitor the sensor arrays.
Elint sensors
Some starships were outfitted with advanced military-grade sensors designed to collect electronic signals intelligence, also known as elint [1]. The Traffic Interdiction Vessel from the Clone Wars era is an example of such a ship.
Behind the scenes
In the script and novelization of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the sensor array of the Tantive IV is referred to as the "solar fin."
