Aggressor-class destroyer

title: Aggressor-class destroyer

The Aggressor-class destroyer represented one of the various types of [warships](link url) that [Tyber Zann's](link url) [faction](link url) deployed during the [Galactic Civil War](link url).

Characteristics

In terms of size, vessels of this class were similar to the [Galactic Empire's](link url) [Imperial-class Star Destroyers](link url). They were equipped with a pair of linked, high-powered cannons located on the front of the hull. These cannons discharged a substantial [ion](link url) pulse, immediately followed by a massive, swirling [plasma](link url) burst. The initial ion blast would take down shields, allowing the plasma shot to inflict maximum damage. The ships also possessed [turbolaser](link url) batteries situated within their wings. However, the destruction of the main cannons would leave the ship severely vulnerable to conventional capital ships, as it would only have a single turbolaser battery on each side for defense.

Furthermore, the Aggressor-class could utilize its formidable weaponry to bombard enemy positions on the ground from orbit. It was a potent—and costly—warship.

Despite its strong armor, the class's ships were unwieldy in combat. They required protection from faster [capital ships](link url) and their accompanying [starfighters](link url). These vessels were known to initiate their self-destruct sequence when necessary to inflict damage upon the enemy in a losing situation.

History

The Merciless moves out to engage in battle.

The design that eventually became the Aggressor-class originated within the Galactic Empire sometime before the [Battle of Yavin](link url). The blueprints were stored aboard the [first Death Star](link url) for study, along with designs for other new ships. Following the station's destruction, the plans were safely preserved within a [data pod](link url), which Tyber Zann recovered after the battle.

Zann [stole](link url) the prototype ship from the Empire, then modified the plans to create his personal [flagship](link url), the [Merciless](link url). Subsequent Aggressor-class destroyers were constructed according to these revised blueprints. They quickly became a part of Consortium naval forces and proved effective against other capital ships, although they were susceptible to fighter attacks. During their time serving the [Consortium](link url), they also became widely known as "Underworld Capital Ships".

Originally, the Aggressor-class destroyer was designated as the "[Krayt](link url)-class destroyer." This original name persists in game data files for internal references. The [2009](link url) edition of The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia mistakenly refers to the ship as the Aggressor-class "Star Destroyer."
