Alan Norton Fletcher Webb (born on July 2, 1906; died on June 22, 1982) was a performer from England who acted on stage and in films. His most recognized performances were in productions like Chimes at Midnight, King Lear, and The First Great Train Robbery. Webb was initially selected to portray Emperor Palpatine in the film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. However, after contracting the flu, Webb withdrew from the role. As a result, Richard Marquand, the director, chose Ian McDiarmid for the part, who, unlike Webb, had no issues with the elaborate costumes and makeup.
