Ataria Island

Ataria Island was among the larger landmasses found in the Spira system. This island was home to the renowned Aspre Plunge, and the city of Ataria City.

Description

The location of Ataria Island was in the south-eastern part of the planet of Spira. Beaches were the most notable feature of its eastern coastline, while the rest of the island was surrounded by steep cliffs. Ataria City, a popular destination for tourists, was situated along the eastern beaches and featured a large marina extending across the southern inlet. The island's interior was characterized by gentle slopes dotted with numerous small bungalows. The island was served by a sizable spaceport, the only one on Spira authorized to accommodate passenger liners. A network of monorail lines provided rapid transportation throughout the island.

History

While Spira had other resort islands, Ataria Island was widely regarded as the most prestigious and exclusive. It served as both the starting and finishing point for the Spira Regatta Open, a well-known yacht race that drew competitors and spectators from across the galaxy.

Locations

The most significant attraction on Ataria Island was the Aspre Plunge, which was considered the most exclusive resort not only on the island but also on the planet and throughout the entire sector. Constructed into the island's northern cliff, half of the structure was above the water, and the other half was submerged. It offered luxurious hotel accommodations, shopping centers, spas, clubs, upscale dining venues, and a three-story casino.

On the eastern shore was Ataria City, a vibrant tourist hub. The city's marina was the place where the famous Spira Regatta Open yacht race started. The island's spaceport, being the only one permitted to handle passenger liners, was the primary entry point for tourists arriving on Spira. Unlike other spaceports, which often had a dull atmosphere, the one on Ataria Island was exceptionally well-decorated. The landing areas were paved with red marble, and exotic plants were planted in planters, protected by force fields, lining the hardpan. A small area that contained Imperial starfighters and shuttles was present at the spaceport.

Behind the scenes

Ataria Island made its debut in The Spira Regatta, an adventure penned by Paul Sudlow and featured in West End Games' Star Wars Adventure Journal 1.

The island where the Macross spacecraft crashes in the anime series Super Dimension Fortress Macross is named South Ataria Island. The island also bears a geographical resemblance to South Ataria, with the city/bay of Ataria corresponding to the area where the Macross crashed on South Ataria and where the city developed around the rebuilding project.
